Dan Kelly is a multi-faceted designer and sculptor based at the head of Lake Wakatipu, in Glenorchy, near Queenstown, New Zealand.
The self-taught artist has over 30 years’ experience designing and creating three-dimensional signs and sculptures. Dan’s notability as an artist and designer was forged early in his career, he was the very first winner of the prestigious Wearable Art Show in Nelson.
Dan has exhibited nationwide, working on commission and creating multi-medium pieces for feature films.
From century-old fencing to discarded metal, Dan works primarily in recycled materials; sheet brass, copper and rusty steel feature regularly in his works. The materials are shaped, welded, manipulated and aged to create a beautiful verdigris effect.
Dan’s work takes on a wide variety of forms; at Artbay Gallery, much of Dan’s exhibited work includes eye-catching sculptures in the form of New Zealand native birds, such as the now extinct Haast Eagle and Moa. The scale and grandeur of the bird sculptures reflect the awe-inspiring aura of the beasts themselves. Many of the pieces are built to the correct scale and proportion.
Another aspect of Dan’s creations are the abstract sculptures that are imaginative and intriguing in their form, playing with the mysterious and historic feel of the recycled materials. Each piece is big on personality and commands the viewer to take notice.
As all of the materials are aged and weathered during the creation process, the sculptures make great outdoor pieces.
