Ellen's studio practice is concerned with visually responding to elemental forces that shape our lives. In her work, she explores the amazing variety of colour relationships in nature; nature’s light-reflective surfaces and complex patterns that can sometimes appear in unexpected places; and the changes of scale that for her, can allow visual qualities to be seen “up close”, so that a sense of immersion can be suggested.
Ellen completed a BFA in painting at the University of Washington, and later an MFA at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design in Auckland.
Ellen says of her current work: 'As an additional thread of my art practice, I am presently creating collaborative paintings with artist M. G. Walker. Our collaborative works are concerned with ideas of cultural and spiritual transformation, and have been selected as Finalists in national exhibitions, including New Zealand Painting & Printmaking Award and the Walker & Hall Art Award from 2012-14.
