Catherine Roberts - Linger

Exhibition Dates: Thursday 14 - 28th March 2024

Catherine Roberts, Front Room Exhibition ‘Linger’

Who and what inspires your artwork?

Colour, paint, and the creative process! The exploration of what you can achieve with paint and other mediums fascinates me! The possibilities are only bound by your willingness to experiment.

What do you think it is about your work that immediately captures the hearts of collectors?

The intuitive flow of colour and form. I try to create a multi-layer painting with depth, that the longer you look, the more you see.  The abstract nature of my work leaves something to the viewer to interpret, wherever their mind takes it.

Tell us more about your creative process?

I start with a very open minded idea, and then just paint. I let the painting take control and direct me. It is a very intuitive process. Often the end piece not looking anything like that initial “open minded idea”. I use modelling texture, acrylic paints, inks and resin.

Can you tell us about your success as an artist and your biggest career highlight to date?

I have been painting for 20 years, and have had a slowly but surely experience in recognition. In 2014, I received the Signature piece award at the NZ Art Show, this definitely put me on the map, and gave me a boost of confidence, as it was voted by the 10,000 attendees of the show.

What can we expect to see in this upcoming exhibition?

This group of work explores some big movement in colour, So quite abstract. I often battle with overthinking, and I really addressed this and backed myself with “letting it be”, and sitting with it for a while before deciding to rework or not. These are playful and jovial pieces.
