Joshua Ryan Romero
Growing up in the countryside of southwest England, where learning how to write began with a fountain pen, Joshua’s love for the art of ink developed at a young age. Fascinated with the world of calligraphy, Joshua would continue to hone his fine line art skills for the years to come.
Having spent his life in multiple countries and cultures around the world, this multi-national Artist has learnt to become multi-faceted when it comes to the world of creative expression.
Joshua returned to New Zealand in 2023, after a six year immersion as a composer in film music, over in Los Angeles, California. His reprieve from city life found him pen in hand, his therapeutic outlet inspired by his love for the complexity of New Zealand’s mountain ranges. His vessel; ink, instead of music. His acute attention to the feel of jagged peaks, glaciers and lake shores surrounding his hometown of Queenstown, have since been translated by his fountain pen and traditional India inks. This amalgamation of detail and grandeur can be felt in his harmony of Indian ink line art.
“I drew upon my old skills in using traditional fountain pens with calligraphy sets I have been gifted over the years. Trying to muster up a unique approach to an age-old technique. It’s a type of therapy in a way. Curving lines that seem to have no end, that weave in and out of each other. I find they just so happen to capture the drama of New Zealand’s dramatic landscape in a way that brings me peace.” ~ JRR
