Sally Bulling
New Zealand-based painter Sally Bulling, working between Queenstown and Seattle, creates abstract works that evoke a sense of infinite energy.
Vibrant colour is balanced with deeper hues and rich golds, applied through sweeping gestures, dripping flicks, and elaborate pours. Each composition is built gradually over time, with layers thoughtfully superimposed to create works that feel both dynamic and harmonious.
Using mirrors as a canvas, Bulling introduces a luminous depth to her practice, capturing light while subtly reflecting the viewer and their surroundings. Layers of poured glass preserve moments of movement within the work, embedding imagery beneath transparent surfaces. Hand-gilded edges frame each piece, casting a soft aura of light onto the wall.
Bulling’s long-standing fascination with colour underpins her practice. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2002, focusing on colour theory and illusion. Following a successful career in both fashion and fine art, she has returned her focus to painting, with her work gaining the attention of private collectors in New Zealand and internationally.
